Lets Rock the Earth!

Oil Industry Says Biofuel Push May Keep Gas Prices Up

This article is actually fairly boring. Basically about how the oil industry has under invested in refining capabilities in the past decade, resulting in domestic shortage of oil and thus, higher prices at the pump.

Targets set by Bush to increase America's use of bio fuel in the next few decades make it riskier for the oil companies to invest in refining capabilities, which will keep oil prices perpetually higher. A windfall for the oil companies to be sure. They can continue making record profits with a solid (enough) economic argument to further delay costly investments. But whatever, that industry is a dinosaur. Seemingly completely unawares of its own impending extinction.

I'm not really interested in having a discussion about bio-fuels at the moment. Its a very complicated discussion seeing as corn based bio fuels don't really make sense from an economic or an environmental standpoint. This article would have been completely written off had it not been for this bit at the end:

"Some consumers, meanwhile, are trying to drive less or are simply absorbing the higher cost. “I’m already driving the minimum,” said Dennis Zygnowicz, 51, of Garden City, Mich., who recently stopped at a Shell station and paid about $12 to put less than four gallons in his GMC Jimmy. “The only way I could do any less would be to ride a bike.”

I mean...this statement is completely unreal. It is absurd. It is offensive. I cannot believe that these words left the mouth of a real live human being. Obviously if putting your fat ass on a bike would result in you driving less then you are not already driving the minimum. I can barely stomach the thought of acknowledging the existence of this event by commenting on it further so I'll just leave it there.

Proof once again that the New York Times is, indeed, America's Finest News Source.

Oh for those of you who don't know what a GMC Jimmy is, feast your eyes on this bad boy:

AMERICA FUCK YEAH
